Redesigning playscapes of Singapore, our team used the play of light, shadow, reflection and imagination to create our Playscape - CREATURE. CREATURE dives into the wonder of imagination, connecting children to the intangible form of nature - light. By combining it with the ambiguity of the anatomy of a creature, in a single form of a scale, it harnesses the power of imaginative play.

The form is designed to nurture key motor skills crucial in a child’s development while encouraging positive social interaction. It allows endless possibilities to be interpreted and explored where children can create different stories throughout the day and night with this ever-changing playscape.

Key Feature

The key feature of CREATURE is the dichroic film scales. The reflective nature of the film provides an enchanting interaction with its surrounding nature and housing estates. In the day, children can perceive this dynamic playscape in different colours, such as the hues of pink, orange, yellow and blue, from different perspectives.

Harnessing Light

The chosen scales that are attached with translucent solar cells store energy throughout the day to emit a warm glow at night. The captivating glow creates a mysterious and alluring presence in the neighbourhood. This prompts children’s curiosity to interact with nature even during the night.

Modularity

With its modularity, new creatures can be created such that every playscape is always unique. CREATURE opens an opportunity for the connection with nature to be magical and filled with a sense of wonder.
